Calstone’s Remanufacturing Program

As a company, Calstone has conducted extensive research surrounding the importance of environmentally sound policies that will become a standard within the industry in the very near future. A key initiative today is “LEED” (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified buildings and huge emphasis on environmental “sustainability” and “accountability”.

Calstone is proud to offer all customers our Remanufacturing Program that will guarantee that Calstone manufactured products will never see a landfill site.

The Program

Calstone’s Remanufacturing Program is an agreement between Calstone and the Customer, that any old Calstone furniture intended to be replaced with new purchased Calstone furniture by the Customer, will be picked up and returned by Calstone to the manufacturing facility at no charge. This exchange will take place when new purchased Calstone furniture is ready for delivery and installation or as agreed upon with customer.

The Breakdown

When old product is returned to the manufacturing facility Calstone’s trained personnel will examine all components. Reusable items will undergo a “cleansing procedure” which prepares all parts for remanufacturing. Inoperative items will run through a “recycling procedure” where all parts are sorted and prepared for picked up by their appropriate suppliers and returned to warehouses to be properly reused or recycled.

Metal Components

All steel is 100% recyclable and can be recycled many times over without losing durability or strength. The steel that Calstone orders, already contains approx. 45% recycled content. Recycling steel saves energy, conserves natural resources and reduces landfill waste. Studies show that it takes 40 to 50 trees to frame a 2,000-square foot home. The same home could be framed using the steel from just six junked cars. (Canadian Steel Producers Association). It is important that all companies are held accountable for the recycling of materials used in the manufacturing of goods. Calstone has taken these steps and is determined to make a difference.

Returned metal components are broken down into groupings. Legs, back panels, lateral files, overhead units, book cases, pedestals, etc. are sorted and place into three categories based on their condition.

First Category: Items damaged beyond repair.
Second Category: Items slightly damaged but repairable.
Third Category: Items in good condition that can run directly through the manufacturing process.

All items that are damaged beyond repair are placed into a large recycling bin and sold to K & K Recycling, a scrap metal recycling company. All scrap metal is weighed and bought by tonnage.

Items that are slightly damaged, but can be repaired are sent to the appropriate department to be refurbished and prepared for remanufacturing.

Laminate and Edging Components

Returned laminate tops and drawer fronts are placed on metal carts and returned to Calstone’s laminate suppliers. Once tops and drawer fronts reach the laminate supplier, trained personnel will sort items into categories based on condition of goods.

First Category: Reusable laminate items are sent to a holding area where
they are organized and prepared for reworking.

Second Category: All damaged items are sent to a dismantling area where all PVC edging is removed from the laminate.

Fabric

Victor Innovatex, Calstone’s fabric supplier manufactures “Eco Intelligent Polyester Fabrics”. This GreenSpec listed fibre is a sustainable textile for perpetual recycling. Calstone uses this fabric in the manufacturing of tack board and privacy screen products. Returned overhead storage units and privacy screens are sent to a dismantling area where fabric is removed from density board and all metal components are sent to the metal sorting area. Fabric is then packaged and returned to Victor Innovatex to be recycled accordingly.

Miscellaneous Parts

Returned items containing small parts including nylon drawer glides, plastic handles, metal hooks, door locks, metal brackets and connectors, casters, task lighting etc. will be examined by Calstone’s trained personnel and sorted accordingly. All items that can be reused will be sent through the “cleansing procedure” and used as new components. Any small parts that can’t be salvaged will be sent back to the appropriate supplier and recycled accordingly.
